Артикль "the" - определенный и употребляется когда ты имеешь ввиду какой-нибудь определенный предмет из множества подобных. и ни в коем случае не употребляется для множественного числа. например "they can take the banana" (убрали множественное число) но теперь мы потеряли смысл. как это так они могут взять банан? можно артикль совсем убрать. "they can take bananas" - они могут взять бананы. тут уже непонятно какие именно бананы. едем если бананы все же определенные, то можно добавить слово "эти". "they can take those bananas." - они могу взять эти бананы. тут вроде уже понятнее. can - переводится как могу, умею. в смысле "я могу говорить", "я могу ходить", а в данном предложении слово "могут" нужно употребить в форме "им позволено" и лучше использовать глагол may.  "they may take those bananas" - они могут взять эти бананы. я так понимаю, что предложение авторское, то-есть не списанное с учебника и поэтому в будущем не советую переводить тексты или предложения с на   в g**gle там грамматика страдает.
