Ящерицы также представляют свою обособленную эволюционную линию развития несмотря на то, что ящерицы являются ближайшими родственницами змей, а также представляют их прямых потомков. Как и змеи, ящерицы входят в отряд чешуйчатых. Кроме этого, сами ящерицы являются представителями различных эволюционных групп, хотя они объединены некоторыми общими чертами, вроде редукции или полной утраты конечностей.

У всех этих живых существ существуют подвижные веки, а также видимые отверстия, представляющие слуховые проходы. Кроме этого, у них 2 пары конечностей. Следует отметить, что не для всех присущи такие признаки, поэтому специалисты ориентируются на особенности внутреннего строения организма. Практически у всех ящериц присутствует такой рудимент, как грудина и плечевой пояс, которых лишены змеи.

Внешний вид

Экстерьер ящериц отличается огромным разнообразием, при этом фоновая окраска тела связана с возможностью замаскироваться среди естественных условий ландшафта. Несмотря на это, среди ящериц встречаются виды, основной окрас которых представлен зелеными, серыми, бурыми, оливковыми, песочными или черными оттенками. При этом, для ящериц характерным является присутствие на теле различной формы орнаментов, в виде пятен, разводов, полос, как поперечных, так и продольных, а также в виде геометрических фигур.

В природе также встречаются ящерицы, которые характеризуются уникальным окрасом тела. Величина чешуек варьируется в зависимости от вида, поэтому чешуйки могут быть, как крупными, так и мелкими. Расположение их на корпусе так же может быть разнообразным: внахлест, в виде черепичной кровли, впритык друг к другу, в форме кафельной плитки. Зачастую чешуя превращается в своеобразные шипы или гребни.

У некоторых видов чешуйки приобретают свойства особой прочности за счет остеодерма, который представляет костные пластины, расположенные внутри роговых чешуек. Ротовая полость буквально усеяна зубами, при этом у отдельных видов зубы располагаются даже в области неба.
