 BASHKOTOSTAN

The Republic of Bashkortostan is a sovereign republic within the Russian Federation. March 23, 1919 marked the birth of the Bashkir autonomous republic and it became sovereign on October 11,1990. The Head of the State is the President.

Bashkortostan is located along the South Urals at the very junction of Europe and Asia.

The nature here is varied and beautiful - high mountains covered with thick forests, numerous rivers and lakes. The climate is continental with warm, sometimes hot, summers and cold winters.

Its territory is more than 143 thousand square kilometres. It is larger in territory than Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal and many other European and Asian countries.

The population is more than 4 million people. About one hundred nationalities live in peace here. They profess different religions. The Bashkort people profess Islam, but without fundamentalism.

Bashkortostan is rich in oil and gas and oil extracting and oil refining are leading industries in the republic.

Bashkortostan is both industrial and agricultural region. It can meet its own demands in agricultural products such as meat, milk, vegetables and others. The unique lime-tree forests are the source of the delicious Bashkir honey. Bashkortostan is also famous for its koumiss - a kind of drink made from mare milk. Koumiss is considered to be good for one's health. A lot of people come to Bashkortostan's numerous health resorts and sanatoriums to improve their health.

There are 20 cities in the republic. The largest ones are Ufa, Sterlitamak, Salavat, Neftekamsk, Oktyabrsky. The capital city is Ufa. It was founded in 1574.

Медицина относится к наиболее древней деятельности человека. Начиналась она как искусство и постепенно развилась в науку. Основных этапов развития медицины три: медицина древних времён,медицина Средних веков и современная медицина.
Древние люди,как и животные,были подвержены болезням и смерти. В то время медицинские манипуляции были скорее частью церемониальных ритуалов. Знахари использовали магию,чтобы больным или раненым людям. Новые цивилизации,развившиеся из древних племён,стали изучать человеческое тело и его анатомическое строение. Магия всё ещё играла немаловажную роль в лечении,но развивались и новые практические методы. Древние индийцы,к примеру,лечили переломы и использовали ароматерапию. Китайцы были пионерами прививок и иглоукалывания. А вклад греков в медицину был огромен. Первым значимым лицом в греческой медицине стал Эскулап. Его дочери,Гигея и Панацея дали начало династии целителей (лечебная медицина) и гигиенистов (превентивная медицина). Такое разделение справедливо и сегодня. Этические принципы врачей были сформулированы другим греком,Гиппократом. Они известны как клятва Гиппократа. 
Следующей ступенью развития медицины стала медицина Средних веков. Чрезвычайно важным достижением того времени стала больница,первая из которых появилась в 15-ом веке сначала в странах Востока,а потом и в Европе. Другим достижением Средних веков стало основание университетов в 13-14-ых веках. Наряду с другими дисциплинами студенты могли изучать медицину. В 18-ом веке совершались новые открытия в химии,анатомии,биологии и др. Был изобретён стетоскоп (Рене Лаэннеком),вакцина от оспы,открыты анестетики,развивалась иммунология и научная хирургия.
Следующий век характеризовался подъёмом в бактериологии. Важные открытия были сделаны Луи Пастером и Робертом Кохом. Развитие научной бактериологии сделало возможным достижения в хирургии: использование антисептиков и контроль над раневой инфекцией.
Медицина в 20-ом веке сделала огромный вклад в основу медицинских наук. Были открыты группы крови и витамины,инсулин и пенициллин,стала практиковаться пластическая хирургия и трансплантация.
