William Shakespeare is one of the most famous writers. His plays were very popular in his time and they  are popular today.  

Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a glove maker and the family was quite comfortable. William went to school. At the age of about 14, he had to work in the family business.  

William Shakespeare didn’t get university education.

He married  at the age of 18 and had three children.

Then Shakespeare left Stratford for London.  In those days theatre was a very popular and not expensive. There were several theatres, or playhouses in London. One of them, the Theatre, was popular with Queen Elizabeth I herself. Here Shakespeare began his acting career and later started to write plays. In those days theatre-goers enjoyed cruel scenes on the stage. Tragedies in which the central characters died were especially popular with the public.
