the - определенный артикль, т.е. мы уже говорили об этом, и конкретно знаем, о чем идет речь. the может употребляться с множественным числом.

например:
I see a dog (я вижу собаку. т.е. мы о ней ранее не говорили)
the dog is black (собака черная, т.е. именно та собака, которую я вижу, черная)
