"Письмо матери" было написано в 1924 году,в последний период творчества и почтив самом конце жизни поэта.Для Есенина это время подведения итогов.Это стихотворение представляет собой обращение к матери.всё стихотворение пронизано нежностью и трогательной заботой о ней.
Лирический герой восхищается бесконечным терпением и нежной любовтю своей "старушки":
      Пишут мне,что ты,тая тревогу
       Загрустила шибко обо мне,
       Что ты часто ходишь на дорогу
      В старомодном ветхом шушуне.   Лирический герой с горечьюосознает ,чтоо у "его старушки"есть основания беспокоиться о своем непутевом сыне:она знает о "кабацких драках",о запоях.Тоска матери так велика,апредчувствия так нерадостны,что она "часто ходит на дорогу". Но лирический герой пытается утешить мать,обещает вернуться,"когда раскинет ветви по-весеннему наш белый сад".
