Дмитрий Медведев поддерживает связь со своей бывшей школой № 305[14]. Учительница Вера Смирнова вспоминала: «Он очень старался, всё время посвящал учёбе. Когда Дмитрий Медведев поступил в университет, он познакомился с Николаем Кропачевым(сейчас является ректором СПбГУ), который охарактеризовал его так: «Хороший, крепкий студент. Занимался спортом, тяжёлой атлетикой. Даже что-то выиграл для факультета. Но по основному курсу был таким же, как все. Старательный только очень»[15]. Первый заместитель председателя Государственной думы Олег Морозов высказался о нём как о «молодом, энергичном, лучше не бывает»[16].

Окончил юридический факультет Ленинградского государственного университета имени А. А. Жданова в 1987 году и аспирантуру ЛГУ в 1990 году. С юности увлекается хард-роком, в числе любимых групп упоминает Deep Purple, Black Sabbath и Led Zeppelin; коллекционирует записи этих и других коллективов (в частности, собрал полную коллекцию записей группы Deep Purple[17]). Слушает также русские рок-группы, в частности, Чайф. В студенческие годы увлекался фотографией, занимался тяжёлой атлетикой, выиграл в своей весовой категории соревнования в университете по тяжёлой атлетике[18]. Член ВЛКСМ с 1979 года.

Listens and Russian rock band, in particular, CHajf. As a student interested in photography, was engaged in weightlifting, he won in his weight category competition at the University Weightlifting [18]. A member of the Young Communist League in 1979.
