My best day of the year was when we celebrated New Year's Day. Dad bought a nice Christmas tree and we put it in the living room. My sister and I helped him to decorate the tree.Mum and grandma cooked a lot of delicious food and we had a delicious festive dinner. We watched TV and after that we went for a walk to watch fireworks.When we got back, we found the presents, Santa Claus put under the Christmas tree while we were away. My sister and I were very happy. We both got new cell phones!  It was my best day of the year.

Мама и бабушка приготовили много вкусной еды, и у нас был вкусный праздничный ужин. Мы смотрели телевизор и после этого пошли гулять, чтобы посмотреть праздничный салют. Когда мы вернулись, мы нашли подарки, которые Санта-Клаус положил под новогоднюю елку, пока нас не было. Мы с сестрой были очень счастливы. Мы оба получили новые мобильные телефоны!  Это был мой лучший день в году.

This text is about a biologist and conservationist Roger Payne. He discovered that whales sing and their songs can be heard across entire oceans.

Before he studied whales he had become an expert in animal acoustics. In 1967 Roger went to Bermuda where he met Frank Watlington. Frank told Roger about strange sounds that he had heard underwater. Frank thought the noises were coming from whales.

After that Payne and his colleague Scott McVay found out that the sounds were whales' songs which could travel across entire oceans. It happened at the time when hunters killed thousands of whales.  Roger Payne released a recording of whale songs and it helped to start the 'Save the Whales' movement. In 1986 commercial whaling was banned.

Payne still is busy studying and protecting whales.
