Почему works а не work, wears а не wear, helps а не help, cooking а не cook, play а не playing, thinks а не think.

Потому что в Present Simple глагол 3-го лица единственного числа(he/she/it) в утвердительном предложение всегда имеет окончание -s-:he works,She wears,it helps.
