1. Положительная форма (прилагательное без степени сравнения):
large (большой)
2. Сравнительная форма образуется путём добавления к прилагательному суффикса -er :
larger (больше)
3. Превосходная форма образуется путём добавления суффикса -est :
largest (наибольший).

При этом соблюдаются следующие правила:
1. если прилагательное заканчивается на согласный звук, то он удваивается:
big - bigger - biggest
2. если прилагательное заканчивается на y с предшествующим согласным, то y меняется на i :
happy - happier - happiest
3. если прилагательное заканчивается на е перед суффиксами -er, -est, то оно опускается:
white - whiter - whitest.
