При втором ходе поршня вниз – рабочий ход с большим подъёмом давления в цилиндре и выделением тепла при сгорании топлива, а при втором ходе поршня вверх - ходе выпуска – происходит выталкивание поршнем отработанных газов. Впускные и выпускные клапаны в цилиндре управляют поступление воздушно топливной смеси и выпуск отработанных газов. В конце рабочего хода, давление газов в цилиндре 2.8 до 3.5 кг/ cm2 . Эти газы выходят при открытии выпускного клапана. Они выталкиваются к глушителю - участку трубопровода увеличенной площади сечения, содержащему расширяющиеся каналы и перфорированные пластины, через которые расширяются газы и выпускаются в атмосферу.

Большую плавность работы четырехтактного двигателя обеспечила разработка четырехцилиндрового двигателя, который обеспечивает передачу энергии от того или иного из цилиндров на каждом такте цикла.
