Кострома также известна рядом известных людей, которые жили и совершали свои деяния в Костроме. Крестьянин Иван Сусанин запутал врагов в густых лесах и гиблых болотах, где он встретил свою смерть, но где и вражеские отряды тоже сгинули. Город был разрушен пожаром в 1773 году, однако центр был сразу же отстроен, в замечательном стиле русского классицизма. В Центральном районе в настоящее время расположены здания и комплексы, построенные в период между 1770-1830 годами. Но самое приятное, что сделать в Костроме - это прогуляться вдоль центральных улиц с их торговыми галереями и деревянными домами. Хорошим местом для прогулок также является набережная реки Волги.
