Отряд Бабочки, или Чешуекрылые, объединяет свыше 150 тыс. ви­дов (рис. 132). У взрослых особей ротовой аппарат сосущего типа: они пьют нектар с длинного хоботка.

Две пары перепончатых крыльев покрыты видоизмененными волоска­ми — чешуйками преломлять свет.

Личинки бабочек, или гусеницы, имеют грызущий ротовой аппарат и удлиненное червеобразное тело с ложными ножками на брюшке. Слюнные железы гусениц превращаются в шелковыделительные. Из шелковой нити гусеницы одних видов (например, шелкопрядов) пле­тут защитную оболочку — кокон или прикрепляют куколку к различ­ным предметам (махаон, адмирал и др.). Гусеницы преимущественно питаются тканями растений, хотя гусеницы шубной моли — изделиями из шерсти или меха. Опасными вредителями сельскохозяйственных растений являются гусеницы яблонной моли, капустницы, непарного шелкопряда, запасам зерна — моли амбарной.

Многие бабочки, в первую очередь тропические (рис. 132, 4), пора­жают своей красотой. В Украине такими являются, например, поли­ксена (рис. 132, 7), махаон (рис. 138, 2) и др.

Человек одомашнил тутового шелкопряда. Его гусеницы питаются листьями шелковицы, взрослые особи не питаются вообще. Это исклю­чительно домашние животные, в природе они не встречаются. Гусеница тутового шелкопряда образует шелковую нить длиной около 2 км. Шел­ководство зародилось в Древнем Китае свыше 5 тыс. лет тому назад

Man domesticated silkworm. Its caterpillars feed on the leaves of mulberry, adults do not feed at all. It only pets in nature, they do not occur. The caterpillar of the silkworm silk thread forms about 2 km long. Sericulture originated in ancient China more than 5 thousand. Years ago.
