"nice picnic was arranged by them last month" или "last month a nice picnic was arranged by them"? и, если можно, объясните почему.

В первом варианте не хватает aртикля а nice picnic
и первое,и второе предложение верны,так как обстоятельство времени (когда) может употребляться и в начале,и в конце предложения.

My friend Dima went on a boat trip with his friends during the last weekends. The weather was fine and they took a tent and foodstuffs for 2 days. Of course, they took fishing-rods with them. They floated to the nearest island and camped there. Then they put up their tent and made a camp-fire. It was lunch time. After lunch they lay in the sun, listened to music, swam in the lake and played with a ball.  Then they cooked their dinner. After dinner they went to fish and they were lucky to catch some. For supper they had tasty fish soup and then  they sat by the fire, played the guitar and talked and laughed.
In the morning they were going to go fishing again but, unfortunately, it started to rain. They had a snack, collected all their things at the moment when the rain stopped and soon boated back to the shore. They were all cheerful and in high spirits and they were happy that they had fun on the island.
