На Красной площади недалеко от ворот величественно красуется один из самых главных символов России и Москвы – Храм Василия Блаженного. Полное его название - собор Покрова Божией Матери на Рву, а «Храм Василия Блаженного» название народное, разговорное, и связано с тем, что во храме этом хранятся мощи русского святого Василия Блаженного.

Ах, красив храм, праздничен! Он похож на нарядный расписной сказочный терем, а купола его напоминают яркие леденцы, и они все разные, не повторяются: один шишками золотыми усеян, как ночное небо звездами, другой купол напоминает очищенный апельсин с зелеными и желтыми дольками, третий опоясан зигзагами алыми, как поясами изысканными. Всего во храме 10 куполов. Выстроен храм из кирпича и украшен весь цветными узорами. Высота его 65 метров!

Построили этот волшебный собор в честь победы над Казанским ханством по приказу самого Ивана Грозного. Началось строительство в далеком 1555 году. Возводили здание 6 лет. Поговаривают, что сначала храм выглядел совсем не так, как сегодня, он был весь белый, а позже стены стали раскрашивать, и делали это каждый раз по-разному. В конце концов, получился тот уникальный яркий наряд собора, что сохраняется и по сей день.

Создателями собора считаются русские мастера Постник и Барма. В летописи о них написано, что были это мастера премудрые и такому чудному делу (строительству храма) удобные. И по истине храм у них получился великолепным!
История знает несколько дат, когда величественный храм находился под угрозой уничтожения, например, во время войны с Наполеоном и после Октябрьской революции. И всякий раз его что-то всякий раз Храму Василия Блаженного удавалось чудесным образом избежать разрушения. И сейчас стоит храм не шатается, и века простоит – не шелохнется!
