The Goncharov Museum is the most famous building in Ulyanovsk. Construction of a red brick with a memorial plaque and chimes is the most famous sight of Ulyanovsk. The official name is the Historical and Memorial Center-Museum of IA Goncharov. Here was born and lived IA. Goncharov. Initially, the house looked different: there was no clock tower, and it was two-story. The real house of Goncharovs was partially preserved in the corner part of the building, where a memorial plaque is installed. The clock on the tower of the house used to decorate the bell tower of the Savior-Ascension Cathedral where Goncharova was baptized. The opening of the museum took place in 2012 on the day of the writer's 200th anniversary. Since the museum is dedicated to the writer, the basis of the collection is the personal belongings of Goncharov and his entourage. The exposition includes various periods of the writer's life: childhood, education in St. Petersburg, Goncharov's journey on the Pallada frigate with the model of the ship, and also the halls devoted to his novels Oblomov and Obryv. The third floor is a museum exposition of the clock, here the mechanism of the city clock is installed.
