Маленький мальчик с взъерошенными волосами, трогательный и одинокий, - так выглядит главный герой. Он живет один на крохотной планете величиной с дом и по утрам убирает свою планету, выпалывая семена баобабов. Старательно ухаживает малыш и за красавицей-розой, которая однажды проросла из семечка.
Но роза обижает принца колкостями, капризничает. И однажды принц уходит от нее, пускается в путешествие.
На разных планетах побывал наш герой, и везде он чувствовал себя чужим. Встретил короля, который хвастался, что он лучше и красивее других, хотя жил на планете один. Был у пьяницы. Тот пил, чтобы забыть, что ему стыдно пить. Видел делового человека, которому некогда было жить из-за подсчетов никому не нужных чисел.
Познакомился с ученым, ничего не видящим из-за книг. Принц удивлялся, какими глупыми вещами занимаются эти люди, очень одинокие и несчастные. Мальчик надеялся найти друзей, а оказался еще более одиноким.
