Richard Evans is a teen, who helps out at a local animal shelter. He started working there a year ago because he liked the idea to do something worthwhile and help animals. 
Basically, he helps out for a couple of hours about twice a week. Richard helps the staff members feed and clean and exercise the animals, answer phone calls or help people to choose a pet.
There are different animals at the shelter, such as cats, dogs, sometimes farm animals. Most of the animals are brought to the shelter by their owners or they are removed from their homes because they are not being looked after properly. Once Richard went with a member of staff to rescue a pony from a farm where it had been neglected.
Some animals need more care than usual, so a foster home is found for them. Richard has taken home two kittens, an injured guinea pig, and a puppy. 
Summer is the busiest time for shelters because many people abandon their pets when they go on holiday. Richard thinks it's great to volunteer and help others because he has learnt a lot about himself and others through volunteering.
