I would tell about my uncle Oscar. He was nice man. He used to work in the bank as accountant all day long. He had talkative wife and 2 selfish and greedy children. Uncle Oscar never went to cinema, museum. He liked music, but never played any instruments. He liked his life, he never complained.

However he had a hobby, to which he gave all his free time – collection of stamps. His family took no interest to it, but I did.  

On the 14th of October 1951 uncle Oscar had gone from house to work, but never got there. No people saw him, or just weren’t sure.

Оно означает действие, которое происходило раньше на регулярной основе, но к настоящему моменту прекратилось. В конкретно нашем случае: дядя Оскар раньше регулярно ходил на работу, но больше не ходит.
