Смоленск находится в центральной части Русской равнины, в области умеренно-континентального климата. Особенности расположения города оказывают решающее влияние на природные условия этой местности.

Большая часть Смоленской области покрыта густыми лесами. Общая их площадь 2100 тыс. га, что составляет 38% территории.
