Little children often want to be firefighters, especially when they see red fire-engines with lights and siren moving fast across the city. Adults always treat firefighters with respect and honour. The reason is clear — firefighters are brave people who every day risk their lives to save others.

Firefighters often work in hazardous conditions that require mental and physical strength. They save people in the first place, but they also do everything possible to save forests, crop fields and people's properties. They not only prevent and fight fires, they also rescue people from elevator emergencies and deal with car crashes, chemical spills, flooding, water rescue and other life-threatening situations. These professionals undergo special training, provide first aid and educate people. They have to train every day and carry heavy equipment, so they must be healthy and strong and they must have teamwork skills.

Firefighting is a dangerous and physically demanding job, but it is also very important and useful to our society. No modern technologies, construction materials or automatic fire extinguishing systems can guarantee fire safety, which means that firefighters will always be needed.

It was a bright, spring morning and Elizabeth and her two best friends, Catherine and Becky, decided to go away for the weekend. After a while they got hungry, so they stopped to get something to eat. Becky and Elizabeth went into the shop while Catherine stayed in the car.When the two girls walked back to meet Catherine, they realized the car was not there anymore. They glanced around and noticed it was parked behind the shop. After a few minutes they both began to worry, as they couldn’t see Catherine.Then they heard a voice coming from a shed behind the shop. It was Catherine. She (had) wanted to go to the WC and the door (had) locked behind her. She was inside for nearly an hour. After a few minutes of laughter and tears, the girls were back on the road and all was well.
