 По литературе премию присудили Борису Пастернаку. К этому времени, его уже выдвигали несколько раз: с 1946 по 1950 год и в 1957, но положительное решение комитет принял только 23 октября 1958. Наверно, никто так не пострадал от положительного решения комитета, как этот гениальный писатель. На него были организованы такие гонения, которых он не смог вынести.

   23го он получил радостное сообщение и в этот же день вышло Постановление Президиума СССР "О клеветническом романе". Имелся в виду роман "Доктор Живаго", хотя официально награда была назначена не за него, а за вклад в развитие лирической поэзии.                     25 октября 1958 года, на собрании Правления Союза писателей СССР, самые видные деятели советской литературы выступили с предложением лишить Бориса Леонидовича гражданства и выслать из страны. 30 октября писатель направил открытое письмо Н.С. Хрущеву   о том, что он отказывается от премии. Тем не менее гонения на   Пастернака так и не прекратились. Ранимое сердце лирика не    выдержало,он начал сильно болеть и в 1960 году умер. Ему был 71 год.
