The Statue of Liberty stands proudly on Liberty Island to the east of the final stretch of New York harbour before Manhattan Island is reached. This famous copper landmark was erected in 1886 as a gift from the people of France and is of a woman holding a torch depicting enlightenment and freedom from the shackles of tyranny and oppression.
Fittingly, it was The Statue of Liberty which first greeted weary travellers looking to immigrate into the United States that the end of their journey was nigh- the millions of persons who had undertaken much hardship in crossing the Atlantic ocean to start a new life saw this as a symbol of hope and destiny.
