Returned - Past Simple - действие единоразово и оно завершено.
had been studying Past Perfect Cont. - действие длилось в в течение какого-то промежутка времени
had sent/sent - Past Perfect/PastSimple. Почему тут вопрос - потому что в разных заданиях дается разный вариант. Иногда авторы хотят подчеркнуть то, что действие произошло намного раньше другого действия. Т.е. в нашем случае  люди отправили его туда раньше, чем он там проучился 7 дней. Но в некоторых учебниках используют паст симпл, мол оно и есть То есть авторы не делают акцент на разницу во времени между событиями. Но такое бывает редко, так что, скорее всего, первый вариант)
