Молодой человек, прогуливаясь с девушкой Надей, предлагает ей скатиться на санях с горки. Надя очень боится, но рассказчик её уговаривает, и девушка уступает. Катясь с горки, парень тихо говорит: «Я люблю вас, Надя!»

Немного отойдя от «катания» она вопросительно смотрит на рассказчика. Девушку мучает вопрос, кто произнёс эти слова — молодой человек или ветер. Несмотря на страх, она предлагает прокатиться ещё раз, надеясь снова услышать эти слова.

На другой день утром рассказчик получает записочку: «Если пойдёте сегодня на каток, то заходите за мной. Н.» С этого дня он с Наденькой каждый день ходит на каток, и, слетая вниз на санках, всякий раз произносит вполголоса те же слова, к которым Надя привыкла, как к морфию.

В марте молодой человек собирается в Петербург. За два дня до отъезда рассказчик сидит в садике, отделённом забором от двора, в котором живёт Наденька. Через щель в заборе юноша видит девушку. Дождавшись порыва ветра, он произносит те же четыре слова и уходит.
