В школе имеются профессиональные учителя, которые объясняют все. А дома, вы можете не понять тему вообще или выучить неправильно. Грамматика и лексика не так трудна, главное разобраться когда какие времена использовать.
Достаточно того, что бы дома заниматься полтора или два часа в день.
Я учусь английскому уже три года под наблюдением квалифицированных учителей, и я достаточно знаю, даже программу за 8-9 класс, наверное даже больше.
