Photosynthesis is a process used by plants to convert light energy of the Sun into chemical energy to generate their own food. Photosynthesis process from start to finish:

1) Plants absorb water (H2O) and mineral salts from the soil through their roots.  

2) Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air through stomata (small pores) of leaves.  

3) Chlorophyll traps sunlight energy to make food, in other words, to convert water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen (O2), sugar and starch.

4) Plants give off (release) oxygen into the air (through stomata of leaves) and store/use sugar and starch for their growth.  

Additional information:  

- Plants absorb carbon dioxide just like we breathe oxygen. Plants "breathe" carbon dioxide in and "breathe out" (release) oxygen as a waste product.

- Plants absorb sunlight energy using a compound (pigment) called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is green, which is why so many plants appear green. Chlorophyll is in structures (organelles) called chloroplasts that are inside plants’ cells. Hence, photosynthesis process takes place in the chloroplasts.  

- Starch turns iodine dark blue.

Хлорофилл находится в структурах (органеллах), называемых хлоропластами, которые находятся внутри клеток растений. Следовательно, процесс фотосинтеза происходит в хлоропластах.
