Самое раннее использование аналогичного ?термина? известного автора, датируется в 1918-1920 сроки, когда  США конструктор стрелкового оружия Исаак Льюис разработал ряд экспериментальных автоматов, которые он назвал "Нападение фазовых винтовки". Эти винтовки стреляли в стандартной армии США о вопросе винтовочных припасах в этом период .30 M1906 (.30-06, 7.62x63mm), были в прямой конкуренции с M1918 BAR автоматической винтовки Браунинга Джона. Обе автоматические винтовки Льюиса и Браунинг были разработаны, со схожим понятием как "Гуляющий огонь", которое возникло на французском языке в 1915 году в окрестностях, и впервые реализовано в злополучной CSRG M1915 "Пулемёт Шоша" машинной винтовки. Эта концепция была названа для переносного автоматического оружия с его основным применение в том, чтобы обеспечить подавляющий, поддерживающий огонь для пехоты во время нападений на занятых позиций противника.
