This holiday strangely combines the Celtic tradition of celebrating the evil spirit and the Christian-the worship of everything sacred.

Across Europe, this night marked the transition to winter. They believe that at this time the souls of the dead visit former homes to warm themselves by the fire. They wander around collecting donations of food and drink from other family members. The souls of the dead could take on different forms-the evil ones took over the animals.
