The Kebin Earthquake - 1911The south of Kazakhstan is located on a seismic active zone, sothe area has had many powerful earthquakes. In 1911 the Kebinearthquake almost completely destroyed the city of Almaty. Ithappened on 3rd January and over 770 buildings collapsed inthe city. Many historic buildings were damaged, but one famousbuilding survived. It was the Ascension Cathedral in PanfilovPark. At 54m high, it remains one of the tallest woodenbuildings in the world. Amazingly, it survived even though therearen't any nails in the entire building!​
