Galileo made the first optical telescope used for astronomy in 1609. Later scientists got a lot more information about the solar system and its planets with the help of interplanetary probes, space capsules that carry special equipment and send information back to the Earth. From the beginning of the space age, both the Soviet Union and the United States were active in the exploration of the solar system. Both countries had their own space programmes, competing with each other. Both countries sent their probes to the Moon, to Venus, Mars and, later, to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Anyhow a real breakthrough in space exploration was the beginning of manned space flights. The first manned flight took place on April 12, 1961, when Yuri Gagarin went into orbit in the Soviet Vostok 1 spaceship and proved that man could survive in space. At the same time the USA carried on its programme of the Moon exploration and in 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon.
