Sport in Ukraine

Good health is a great blessing. Everybody should do everything they can to remain healthy. Being in good health means having both mind and body in good working order, free from diseases and pain, in our country sport is a matter of national importance, for its aim is to improve the health of the people and to bring up a generation of physically strong, cheerful and courageous young men and women.

Nowadays the young and old like to participate in various kinds of sports. Physical education is a subject in schools. The sports programme in schools for youth includes swimming, volleyball, tennis, track and field and others. Schoolchildren regularly participate in sports competitions. Many Pupils become members of sports club. Every year in our country many different sports competitions are held at different levels. There are a lot of famous athletes of whom Ukraine is very proud.

Lviv's reputation for sports rests on the top athletes who have started their careers here, for example, Igor Ter-Ovanesyan, the long-jumper, was competitor in five Olympic competitions taking bronze medals in the and Tokyo Olympic Games. He is a three – time European champion. Others include pentathlon Pavlo Lednyov; gymnast Victor Chukarin, winner of six Olympic gold medals, three silver and one bronze; gymnast Bogdan Makuts, winner of a gold Olympic medal in Seul; and fencer Yevgeny Cherepovsky. Athletes from Lviv and the Lviv region have won a total of 31 Olympic medals: eleven gold, eleven silver, and nine bronze.

The Lviv chess school has a high reputation. Among its former pupils are the international grand master Olexandr Bilyavsky, Oleg Romanyshin, Andrian Mykhalchyshyn, Marta Litynska, Vasil Ivanychuk and losef Dorfman. A chess hall has been opened in the town, and students of the Lviv Physical Training Institute have the opportunity to specialize in chess. In the Physical Training Institute there are 2,000 students. The Lviv fencing school which was set up by Professor Vadim Andriewsky has won fame. Promising younger sportsmen of Lviv are coached at special schools.

Several times our sportsmen were standing on the top step of the Olympic pedestal and the anthem of Ukraine was played in their honour.

Our Ukrainian football teams, "Dynamo", "Metalist", "Chornomorets" and "Dnipro" took part in European championships.

Хороше здоров'я – велике щастя. Кожен повинен зробити все можливе, щоб залишитися здоровим. Маючи гарне здоров'я, як психологічне, так і фізичне, будучи вільним від хвороб і болю, в нашій країні спорт – фактор національної важливості, бо його мета – поліпшити здоров'я людей і принести покоління фізично сильних, бадьорих і відважних молодих чоловіків і жінок.

У даний час молодь і старі люблять брати участь у різних видах спорту. Фізкультура – шкільна дисципліна. Спортивна програма в школах для молоді включає плавання, волейбол, теніс, трек, легку атлетику та інші. Школярі регулярно беруть участь у спортивних змаганнях. Багато учнів стають членами спортивного клубу. Щороку в нашій країні багато різних спортивних змагань проводяться на різних рівнях. Є багато знаменитих атлетів, якими дуже пишається Україна.

Спортивна репутація Львова базується на легкоатлетах, які почали тут свої кар'єри, наприклад, Ігор Тер-Ованесян, стрибун у довжину, був учасником п'яти Олімпійських змагань, який взяв бронзові медалі на Римських і Токійських Олімпійських іграх. Він триразовий Європейський чемпіон. Інші – п'ятиборець Павло Ледньов; гімнаст Віктор Чукарін, володар шести Олімпійських золотих медалей, трьох срібних і однієї бронзи - гімнаст Богдан Макуц, володар золотої Олімпійської медалі в Сеулі і фехтувальник Євгеній Череповський. Атлети зі Львова і Львівської області виграли загалом 31 Олімпійську медаль: одинадцять золотих, одинадцять срібних і дев'ять бронзових.

Львівська школа шахів має високу репутацію. Серед її колишніх учнів – міжнародний гросмейстер Олександр Білявський, Олег Романишин, Андріан Михайлишин, Марта Літинська, Василь Іваничук і Йосиф Дорфман. Шаховий зал був відкритий у місті, і студенти Львівського Інституту Фізкультури мають можливість спеціалізуватися в шахах. У Інституті Фізкультури 2000 студентів. Львівська фехтувальна школа, яка була заснована професором Вадимом Андрієвським, має популярність. Перспективні молоді спортсмени Львова навчаються в спеціальних школах.

Декілька разів наші спортсмени стояли на вищій сходинці Олімпійського п'єдесталу і гімн України був зіграний на їх честь.

Наші Українські футбольні команди "Динамо", "Металіст", "Чорноморець" і "Дніпро" взяли участь в Європейських чемпіонатах.

Sport plays a big role in our life. Many people do sport in our country. They want to stay healthy. Sport is a good mean of struggling with stress.

In my opinion sport is important for healthy free time. Sport also makes people strong and prepares a lot of joy.

Some people participate in sports, others prefer watching them on TV. It is known that walking for an hour is healthier than irregular participation in any active physical activities. To keep fit some people join special classes or take part in aerobics or yoga, do some kind of training in a gym. Others play football, badminton, volleyball, tennis.
