За правління Вітовта (1392–1430 рр.) багатьох литовських князів, які мали уділи в Русі-Україні, було позбавлено володінь.

Самостійність удільних князівств непокоїла великого князя. Задля утвердження та зміцнення своєї влади він докладав зусиль, щоб ліквідувати найбільші князівства, урівняти князів із боярством.

Ліквідація удільних князівств для князівської верстви означала обмеження їхніх прав.

Проти такої політики об'єдналися вітебський князь Свидригайло Ольґердович, сіверський князь Дмитро-Корибут Ольґердович, київський князь Володимир Ольґердович і подільський князь Федір Коріатович.

Ці князі були проти підпорядкування своїх земель новій Польсько-Литовській державі.

Протистояння переросло у воєнний конфлікт, у якому удільні князі зазнали поразки.

Землі Дмитра-Корибута Вітовт передав князю Федору Любартовичу, в якого перед тим було відібрано його волинську вотчину.

Не зміг утримати уділ і Федір Коріатович, який володарював на Поділлі після смерті своїх трьох братів. Цього князя Вітовт позбавив уділу теж у 1393 р. 

Року 1394 р. він вигнав із Київської землі Володимра Ольґердовича й передав цей уділ його братові Скиргайлу.

Та володарював у Києві Скиргайло Ольґердович недовго: за літописним оповіданням, невдовзі його було отруєно. А в Києві утвердився князь Іван Ольгимунтович Гольшанський.

Отже, протягом 1393–1395 рр. позбавлені уділів були найзначніші князі.
