My favourite holiday is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.  We celebrate this holiday on December 31 and January 1.  The whole family assembles at the big dinner table with lots of delicious food. Traditional Russian New Year dishes are Olivie salad, “Seledka Pod Shuboi” (“Herring Under the Fur Coat”),  which is a beetroot and herring salad, pickled vegetables and mushrooms, meat and potatoes or roast chicken.

While having dinner we usually watch New Year TV shows and then, at midnight, we say, “Goodbye, Old Year. Hello, New Year!”  

Some people like to celebrate this holiday outdoors, so they go to central city squares where there is a large New Year tree. People sing songs, dance and watch fireworks.

Мой любимый праздник - Новый год. Мы отмечаем его 31 декабря и 1 января. Вся семья собирается за большим обеденным столом с большим количеством вкусной еды. Традиционные российские новогодние блюда - салат «Оливье», «Селедка под шубой» (салат из свеклы и сельди), маринованные овощи и грибы, мясо с картофелем или жареная курица.

Во время ужина мы обычно смотрим новогодние телешоу, а затем, в полночь, говорим: «Прощай, Старый год. Здравствуй, Новый Год!»

Некоторые люди любят отмечать этот праздник на открытом воздухе, поэтому они идут на центральные городские площади, где стоит большая украшенная ёлка. Люди поют, танцуют и любуются фейерверками.

In our country people usually celebrate their birthday at home with relatives. But sometimes they go to the cafe with friends and relatives or arrange a picnic in the country. The place is beautifully decorated. They often use balloons for decoration. When all the guests gather together, they give their birthday presents to the person who has his birthday. Everybody enjoys the party. They listen to music, tell interesting jokes and stories, play different games, arrange competitions. The meal is always delicious. Then a big and tasty cake appears on the table. The cake sometimes is decorated with candles and the host blows out candles on the cake, wishing something to himself for the next year. Then guests sing songs and dance to music.

They talk and have fun. I think everybody likes birthday parties.

В нашей стране, люди обычно празднуют свой день рождения дома с родственниками. Но иногда они ходят в кафе с друзьями и родственниками или устраивают пикник за городом. Место красиво оформлено. Они часто используют воздушные шары для украшения. Когда все гости собираются вместе, они дарят свои подарки на день рождения человеку, у которого есть день рождения. Всем нравится вечеринка. Они слушают музыку, рассказывают интересные анекдоты и истории, играют в разные игры, устраивают конкурсы. Еда всегда вкусная. Затем на столе появляется большой и вкусный торт. Торт иногда украшают свечами и хозяин задувает свечи на торт, желая что-то себе на следующий год. Затем гости поют песни и танцуют под музыку. Они разговаривают и веселятся. Я думаю, что все любят день своего рождения.
