В 12- летнем возрасте поступил в военную академию в Пикскилл, но через 2 года вынужден ее покинуть из-за проблем из сердцем. В 17-летнем возрасте Фрэнк Баум начал издавать второй журнал «Филателист». В 1876 году заинтересовался разведением домашней птицы. Через 4 года выдает журнал по птицеводству. Первой публикованной книгой Баума стало «Краткое руководство по разведению, воспитанию и содержанию Гамбургских кур» (1886).

Банкротство привело к смерти отца, а пожар уничтожил остальное имущество. В 1888 году семья Баум переехала в штат Южная Дакота, а через 3 года – в Чикаго, и везде Фрэнк работал журналистом в периодических изданиях.

Первая детская книга «Рассказы Матушки Гусыни в прозе» была опубликована в 1897 году. Через 2 года вышла еще одна книга «Отец Гусыни: его книга».
