Washington was founded in 1790 and named after the first US president, George Washington, as the capital of the sovereign states, which is called the United states of America. All government departments and numerous federal institutions are housed in the capital. the White house is the President's residence and it is the oldest building of the city. The Capitol, the seat of the Congress is the other main center of the city. The two centers are connected by Pennsylvania Avenue, the main business street of the city. The majority of the state Departments are situated here. Washington, that belongs to the specially created Federal District of Columbia, is always used as the scene for mass demonstrations, and rallies.
