A compliment for a compliment A very rich painter did not have a family, but he had a dog that he loved like a son. The dog was ill – perhaps because the painter gave it too much food. Это не Past simple или Past continuous, а Past simple или Present Perfect.
Правило такое: если речь идет об уже свершившемся действии, но без указания когда именно, и оно могло быть совершено и прямо сейчас- используется Present Perfect. Если же речь идет об уже свершившемся действии с указанием конкретного времени или события, которые уже завершились- используется Past simple.
