The motif of Wilde's fairy tales is  unselfish deed of self-sacrifice. The statue of the Happy Prince asks a Swallow take the sheets of gold from him , scratch  eyes out of sapphire and presents  the poor. Presenteded with the help of the  Swallow his treasures, the Prince-statue made happy many needy residents of the capital. In the fairy tale Happy Prince cried, seeing the disaster of the needy residents of the city. But he did not notice the disaster of his messengers  the Swallow. So the Swallow's death   was a complete surprise to him. Her death opened the depth of all the suffering, which suffered the  Swallow, having agreed to be his messenger. The fact that he, the Prince, was the cause of all the suffering, and the death of the Swallow. Thus, a leaden heart  split from the strong feelings of the Prince - statue.
