Help me i don`t undrerstend

1. When we started  talking I realized that we had met before. (to start, to meet) 

2. When I looked  at my suitcase I could see that somebody had tried  to open it. (to look, to try)

3. The doctor  examined him and found that he  had broken his arm. (to examine, to break)

4. We were a few minutes late, so the film had already started when we got  to the cinema. (already to start, to get)

5. He had not seen her for a long time since the day we
said goodbye. (not to see)

6. She told me he had spent  the few years working in a hospital in Brazil. (to tell, to spend)

7. We were hungry. We had just had lunch. (to be, just to have
lunch)
