In fact, there are so many plants thatlow to the ground it is quite dark. So, plantsand trees grow higher to find more light. Butthere's a problem. If a tree has lots of water, it doesn't need a deep root system. If the topof a tree is heavy from the rain, and the rootsystem is shallow, the tree might fall over.Plants in the tropical rainforest have adaptedto these problems. The root systems arewide to provide a good support for the tree.The leaves on some plants have a specialcup shape. This helps the rain run off quicklyand stops the tree getting heavy with water.Many plants grow very high to get moresunlight. Others have big leaves to help theplants get more light. Some plants grow ontall trees so they are closer to the light.​
