Education in russia

everyone in our country has the right to education. it is said in our constitution. but it is not only a right, it is a duty, too. every boy and every girl in russia must go to school, that is they must get a full secondary education. so, when they are 6 or 7 years old they begin to go to school. there are thousands of schools in russia.

there are schools of general education, where the pupils study russian (or a native language), literature, mathematics, history, biology, geography, music, foreign languages. there is also a number of specialized schools, where the pupils get profound knoledge of foreign languages, or maths, or physics.

after finishing 9 classes of the secondary school the young people can continue their education at different kinds of vocational or technical schools, colleges. they not only learn general subjects, but receive a speciality there.

having finished a secondary or a vocational, or a technical school, young people can start working, or they may enter an institute or a university. by the way, some people think, that professional trainings makes it easier to get a higher education. as for high schools, there are a lot of them in our country. some of them train teachers, others - doctors, engineers, architectors, actors and so on. many institutes have evening and extra-mural departments. that gives the students an oportunity to study at an institute without leaving their jobs at plants or factories.

my favourite holiday is the new year. i always celebrate it with my family. before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. we often go to the city centre to see the beautiful new year tree on the main square.we always celebrate new year at home. a week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands. we also put up a new year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. under the tree we usually put statuettes of father frost and snow maiden. we put new year presents there too.

on the 31st of december we always cook salads. my mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. she always bakes our favourite napoleon cake. we watch new year programmes and films on tv.

at about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne. we watch the president’s speech on tv, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. after that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.

when we come back into the room we open our presents. i usually get a lot of presents for the new year. and i always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

31 декабря мы всегда готовим салаты. мама обычно жарит мясо и варит картошку. она всегда печет наш любимый торт наполеон. мы смотрим новогодние программы и фильмы по телевизору.

около десяти вечера мы все садимся за стол. незадолго до полуночи мы зажигаем бенгальские огни, и папа открывает бутылку шампанского. мы смотрим речь президента по телевизору, а затем, пока часы бьют полночь, загадываем желания и пьем шампанское. после этого мы идем на и смотрим фейерверки.

вернувшись в комнату, мы открываем наши подарки. я обычно получаю много подарков на новый год. я тоже всегда стараюсь дарить подарки моим родителям, бабушке с дедушкой и друзьям.
