Returned - past simple - действие единоразово и оно завершено. had been studying past perfect cont. - действие длилось в прошлом в течение какого-то промежутка времени had sent/sent - past perfect/pastsimple. почему тут вопрос - потому что в разных дается разный вариант. иногда авторы хотят подчеркнуть то, что действие произошло намного раньше другого действия. т.е. в нашем случае  люди отправили его туда раньше, чем он там проучился 7 дней. но в некоторых учебниках используют паст симпл, мол прошлое - оно и есть прошлое. то есть авторы не делают акцент на разницу во времени между событиями. но такое бывает редко, так что, скорее всего, первый вариант)
