Девушка по имени джоан серьёзно и долго болеет. она устала от жизни и, глядя в окно на облетающее дерево, загадывает, что вместе с последним упавшим листком придёт ее смерть. ее подруга сью, вконец отчаявшись, рассказывает о своей беде пожилому художнику бергману. проснувшись утром, джоан смотрит за окно и с удивлением видит что один лист до сих пор висит на дереве. она решает, что лист остался там для того, чтобы показать ей, как глупо она поступает. джоан начинает поправляться. когда она была достаточно сильна, сью рассказала ей, что художник бергман нарисовал для неё этот лист на стене, а сам, сильно простудившись, умер.
