I was born in Zimbabwe when it is still called Rhodesia. I enjoyed a completely happy and carefree childhood then, surrounded by the wilderness of Africa. But when I was twelve, we had to leave everything we earned because of the civil war that took place in the country. We were made to move to South Africa. I remember that I found it odd not to be able to mix with children of colour: there were separate schools and even beaches where people of colour weren't allowed to go. Also due to the apartheid regime South Africa was isolated internationally and couldn't take part in many events.
