Жизненный цикл сцифоидных, как правило, представляет собой метагенез, в котором присутствует бесполая (полипоидная) и половая (медузоидная ) стадии. Медузы некоторых представителей характеризуются крупными размерами и порой образуют очень крупные скопления. Полипы сцифоидных (сцифистомы), напротив, обладают очень мелкими размерами — порядка нескольких миллиметров.
