Для меня эта книга затрагивает во не столько войны (хотя судьба главной героини конечно сформирована именно трагедией войны). Но книга про отношения родителей и детей, взгляда на принятие "чужого" (это грубое, но рас мнение) ребенка в семью. Если говорить о юных читателях (а читать можно уже с 1 класса), то для детей книга понять трагедию войны и потери семьи, любви к ближнему (не только кровному), ценности родительской любви. Для детей от 10 лет созвучная проблема, но более выразительно раскрыта в книге М.Шолохова "Судьба человека".
