15 октября 1967 года в волгограде произошло грандиозное событие - была открыта статуя евгения вучетича. родину-мать строили целых восемь лет, она появилась как память о великом сражении и героизме наших солдат. «15 лет поиска и сомнений, печали и радости, отвергнутых и найденных решений. что нам хотелось сказать людям этим памятником на мамаевом  кургане, на месте кровавых битв и бессмертных подвигов? мы стремились передать, прежде всего, несокрушимый моральный дух советских воинов, из беззаветную преданность родине», - сказал на открытии мемориала великий советский скульптор  евгений вучетич  . до построения мемориала, вершиной кургана была местность, находящаяся в 200 метрах от нынешней вершины. сейчас на ней расположен храм всех святых. нынешнюю вершину сформировали искусственно для построения памятника.
