Centralia, Pennsylvania.
Centralia is a ghost-town located in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Its population has reduced from over 1000 citizens in 1980 to only 10 in 2010. This is the result of the underground fire in a coal mine which has been burning since 1962.
In may 1962, the City Council hired five firefighters-volunteers to clean the town garbage dump. Firefighters, as they did before, had set fire to a rubbish heap, letting them burn for a while. But the fire spread through the hole in the air shaft to the other abandoned coal mine under Centralia. All attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful. And the fire is still burning.
Centralia was an inspiration for the popular "Silent Hill" computer-game series and also its film adaptation. I believe this town can be represented as Hell on Earth.
