Last year I came to Russia with my parents. We stayed in Moscow for a year, because my dad had a job at a pharmaceutical company . I would like to describe my staying in this great, powerful and wonderful country. To begin with I'd like to say that the Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one seventh of the earth's surface. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometers. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the south Russia borders with China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders with Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Byelorussia, the Ukraine. It also has a seaboard with USA. Another point I want to deal with is the Russian language. Russian is the first language of more than 220 million of people throughout the world, and it is the official language of Russian Federation. Russia has always been a country of mystery attractive for foreigners. There are lots of villages and towns in Russia famous for their specific crafts: painted boxes in Palekh, wooden tableware in Khokhloma and toys in Dymkovo. Thousands of foreigners visit Russia to enjoy the typical Russian log houses, decorated with wood carvings.
If you come to Moscow for the first time, you should by all means visit the Kremlin, which is very impressive. On the territory of the Kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, the State Kremlin Palace, the Tsar Cannon and the Tsar Bell, the biggest cannon and bell in the world. The tallest Kremlin tower, the Spasskaya Tower, has become the symbol of the country.

Who was the 'Queen of Crime'? Agatha Christie, of course, the world's best known mystery writer. Agatha Christie was born in Devon, England in 1890, and she created many fictional detectives. The most famous are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective, famous for his neat appearance, his obsession with order and his use of psychology in his investigations of crimes. Miss Marple, on the other hand, is nothing like a typical detective. At first glance she is an ordinary old lady who loves knitting and gossip but she can solve the hardest of mysteries and puts many criminals behind bars! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh/1 —* Scotland in 1859. He studied medicine at I the University of Edinburgh. It was one of his professors that inspired him to create the most brilliant detective ever, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes' extraordinary powers of j observation help him solve the most mysterious cases with ' the help of his faithful companion, Dr Watson. Holmes is very logical and extremely intelligent. He wears a cape and hat, smokes a pipe and uses a magnifying glass. Jules Verne lived in Nantes - on the west coast of France. He loved the sea, and when he was only 12, he tried to run away on a ship to the West Indies. Unfortunately for him, the sailors caught him and sent him home. Jules had a great imagination and wrote several adventure st and created mysterious characters like Captain Nemo. In Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo travels under the sea in his submarine, the Nautilus. On his journeys he meets strange sea creatures and finds an underwater city.
