St. Patrick's Day - is the historical Irish holiday . The holiday has British roots . It is celebrated in honor of St. Patrick - the patron saint of Ireland. Tradition has it that the saint banished all snakes from the island , brought Christianity to Ireland .
There are legends about St. Patrick. According to one of them , St. Patrick was born in the family of a deacon of the local church Wales on March 17 of the year 415 . He was captured by pirates, when he was 16 years old . They brought him to Ireland , where he was in the service of the chief Milchan . He worked as a shepherd boy . He later wrote that at that period of his life he prayed many times a day , his faith is all the more strengthened.
